How do you wake up in the morning when you’ve got a project running late?

Personally, if a project is running late, and I’m working till 4 AM, and waking up at 9 or 10, then I need coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.

Friday, October 9th, 2015

Because of the chronic sleep deprivation of the proceeding weeks, I developed this peculiar protocol to ensure that I actually woke up in the morning. Before I went to sleep, I brewed some coffee and poured it into a mug. I put the mug on my bedside table. Then I set two alarms: one alarm for the time I need to be up, and another alarm for a half an hour prior to that. When the first alarm went off, I rolled over, barely conscious, and drank the entire mug of coffee, then fell back to sleep. That way the caffeine was in full force a half an hour later — coursing through my blood vessels on its way to the frontal lobe of my brain — when my second, real alarm went off. I truly don’t know how I would’ve functioned many a morning had I not developed this technique.
